First: Limit the Damage

While you're waiting for us — or before you even call — these three steps can save you a ruined carpet or worse:

1. Turn the water off at the stopcock.It's usually under the kitchen sink, in a downstairs cupboard, or where the mains pipe enters the house. Turn it clockwise until it stops.
2. Open the cold taps downstairs to drain the pipes and take the pressure off the leak.
3. If water is near anything electrical, don't touch it — switch the affected circuit off at the fuse board if you can do so safely.
